Thanksgiving in the Bible is often a harvest feast - a table full of food and people, and a moment to remember who gave it all. Even after a hard year.
“Thou crownest the year with thy goodness; and thy paths drop fatness.”
For the table, a card, or a hard year
Gratitude doesn't need a perfect year. Here are verses to read before the meal, write in a card, or whisper on your own.
Thanksgiving in the Bible is often a harvest feast - a table full of food and people, and a moment to remember who gave it all. Even after a hard year.
“Thou crownest the year with thy goodness; and thy paths drop fatness.”
“When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the LORD thy God for the good land which he hath given thee.”
The oldest Thanksgiving instruction: eat, be full, and say thank you.
“O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.”
Short enough for everyone at the table to say together.
“The eyes of all wait upon thee; and thou givest them their meat in due season. Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing.”
An old table grace, straight from the Psalms.
“Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.”
Seven words - perfect for a card.
“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:”
Thanksgiving is the day we remember on purpose.
“What shall I render unto the LORD for all his benefits toward me? I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the LORD.”
A beautiful verse to read as you raise a glass.
“I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.”
At all times - David wrote this while running for his life.
“Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness; To the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever.”
For the year when the turnaround came - or for hoping it will.
“I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.”
Written from deep trouble. Thanks can be a choice before it is a feeling.

Psalm 136:1 is the classic: "O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever." For a card, 2 Corinthians 9:15 is just seven words: "Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift."
Keep it short and real. Thank God for the food and the hands that made it, name the people at the table, and remember anyone who is missing. You can use the prayer below, or read Deuteronomy 8:10 or Psalm 145:15-16 together.
The American holiday is not, but the idea is everywhere: harvest feasts like the Feast of Tabernacles (Deuteronomy 16:13-15) were days to gather, eat and thank God for the year's provision.
Lord, thank you for this food, for the hands that made it, and for every person around this table. Thank you for carrying us through this year - the good days and the hard ones. Be with those who are missing today, and fill this home with your peace. Amen.
