If you belong to Christ, the punishment for your sin was already carried on the cross. Hard seasons are real, but they are not God paying you back.
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”
Is God punishing me for past sins?
Confessed sin is forgiven, not stored up for later. "As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us" (Psalm 103:12). Some choices still have natural consequences, but that is not God holding your past over you.
Is God punishing me or testing me?
Most hard things are simply part of living in a broken world - Jesus said, "In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world" (John 16:33). Trials can grow patience and faith (James 1:2-4), but God is never the one trying to make you fall (James 1:13).
I feel like God hates me. Does He?
No. "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). He loved you before you got anything right. If this feeling is constant, it may be a sign of depression - please talk to someone.
Is depression a punishment from God?
No. Depression is a real health condition, not a verdict on your soul. When the prophet Elijah was so low he asked to die, God did not scold him - He gave him food, sleep and gentle care (1 Kings 19:4-8). Getting help from a doctor or counselor is not a lack of faith.
God, everything feels like it's going wrong, and I'm afraid it's my fault. Thank you that in Jesus there is no condemnation for me. Take the fear that you are against me, and help me believe that you are for me, even here. Amen.
